UMCMA 2013 Gathering
AWAKEN
July 17–20 at Iliff School of Theology in Denver
The United Methodist Campus Ministry Association (UMCMA) will gather in 2013 exploring the theme Awaken: Christ Shall Give You Light!
The 2013 Gathering will explore the life of campus ministry and campus ministers in breathing the life of Christ into ourselves, within our ministries, with the people with whom we minister and with the institutions where we serve.
Three speakers will lead our conversation:
Enuma Okoro is… Show more an award-winning author of three books on the call and challenge to the spiritual life. Embracing the classic spiritual traditions, the contemporary arts, and her uniquely diverse global and cultural, Enuma writes and speaks on numerous issues based off of three key areas: 1. Spiritual formation, growth and holistic wellness; 2. Women and the transformative power of personal narratives; 3. Identity and Belonging in a diverse world. Enuma will be with us throughout the conference, giving two keynote address and then engage Leonard Sweet in a public conversation.
Leonard Sweet has made a career provoking the church to meet the challenge of the ever-changing world. A theologian, historian, pastor and prolific author, Leonard Sweet has become an influential leader pushing aside assumptions about church and helping craft a vision for the future of the Christian movement. Dr. Sweet will give two keynote addresses and have a public conversation with Enuma Okoro .
Nadia Bolz Weber is the founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an ELCA mission church in Denver, Colorado. She’s a leading voice in the emerging church movement and her writing can be found in The Christian Century and Jim Wallis’ God’s Politics blog. Her Sarcastic Lutheran blog enjoys wide-readership. Nadia will be with us on Saturday morning giving a keynote address than sharing with us during our closing worship.
Derrick Scott and the CCW Band will lead worship. Heading up the Campus to City Wesley Foundation serving the campuses of Northeast Florida, Derrick leads with heart, soul, mind and strength. The CCW Band made up of college-age adults has earned a reputation for solid musicianship. They write much of their own material and have garnered a large following.
Page CXVI also leading worship and will be in concert as The Autumn Film . After forming The Autumn Film, band members Reid and Latifah Phillips and Dann Stockton were leading worship at churches and could not deny the strong beckoning of the hymns. They decided to develop a parallel band; the same people with a new purpose of making hymns accessible again under the new name, Page CXVI. The somewhat cryptic name was intentional. It’s drawn from the page number in a particular copy of The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis, the brilliant passage where Aslan begins to sing Narnia into creation out of a black void. For more information and free music from Page CXVI, visit their official website at pagecxvi.com
