700 Sundays

Comedian Billy Crystal is reprising his Tony Award-winning Broadway show, 700 Sundays, in a limited tour to six cities — and the Winspear Opera House will present him Nov. 17-Nov. 22 as a “non-subscription special engagement.” What this actually means is that subscribers to the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts’ Lexus Broadway Series will get first crack at tickets.

700 Sundays is Crystal’s comic and sentimental solo-stage memoir about growing up on Long Island with his jazz-promoter-and-record-producer father (Billie Holiday took young Billy Crystal to see his first film). The creator of the Commodore record store and label (which recorded Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” when no one else would), Jack Crystal worked two jobs, six days a week. Hence, the title. By the time he died when Billy was 15, the two had only 700 Sundays together — the day they went to ballparks and jam sessions.
