What began as a musical about cats after Andrew Lloyd Webber picked up a book of poems in an airport bookshop has become one of the longest running shows in Broadway's history. Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, CATS features 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song "Memory."
So why did it take so long for the Capitol Center to book the national Broadway tour of CATS? We've tried for years, but it always came down to a matter of feet and inches: On previous national tours, the giant tire, one of the show's signature set pieces, was always too big to fit through the Center's backstage doors. And what's CATS without the tire, on which Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella ascend to the heavens at the end of the show? The designers of this newest tour figured out a way to fit the tire through the loading door of the Capitol Center and many similar vaudeville-era theaters around the country: It splits apart into pieces that can be reassembled on stage. Brilliant!
