The Whipping Man
Passover. April, 1865. The Civil War is over: slaves are being freed and soldiers are returning home. Into the ruins of Richmond comes Caleb DeLeon, a severely wounded Confederate officer. His family’s home is abandoned, save for two former slaves, Simon and John. The three men wrestle with their past, the bitter irony of Jewish slave-owning and the reality of the new world in which they find themselves. Buried secrets from the past refuse to be hidden as the play comes to its shocking climax.
