Session 1:
The Progressive Transformation of American Politics

This seminar will begin with an overview of the past "progressive… Show more century," explaining how the United States came to the place in which we find ourselves today. We will then explore the political science of progressivism, including its critique of the natural rights theory of the American Founding, rejection of constitutional government, and preference of rule by bureaucratic elites over political self-government.


Session 2:
New Dealism and the Modern Politics of Meaning

Progressivism presented a new kind of politics in theory, but institutionalizing that theory and making it real was the work of FDR and the New Deal. We will explore the terms, categories, and language of the New Deal, and how those politics provide the framework for American political discourse today.


Session 3:
The Conservative Movement:
What It Was, What It Needs To Be

For half a century, progressivism faced almost no serious intellectual or political opposition. Starting in the mid-1950s, the modern conservative movement began to coalesce, in opposition to progressivism. But what, exactly, were the goals of conservatism? Has it been successful? Is there a better way to market freedom in America? This seminar will offer an honest self-assessment of the conservative movement and how its aims might be better realized.
