All of us who walk with suffering everyday can't help but suffer along with our patients and clients. This is confirmed by extensive research into caregivers’ experiences in recent monumental disasters— secondary trauma and compassion fatigue affect us all. Burnout is widespread in… Show more our vocation. This research also offers a wealth of understanding and practice for caregivers, useful for self-healing and enhanced resiliency. There are ways to practice our calling effectively without burning ourselves up.

This is a free workshop dedicated to those who give aid and assistance to others dealing with crisis. Caregivers will be trained in professional resiliency in a one-day workshop presented by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. This training is free and open to caregivers citywide.

The Pikes Peak Region Long Term Recovery Group was formed to provide recovery services to individuals and families affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire. They will host this workshop that begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. on February 14, 2013. The workshop will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou, Colorado Springs. (Please use the Weber Street entrance, East side of the building). The presentation is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a one-hour break for lunch.

The presenters include The Rev. James J. Kirk, The Rev. Pat Ashley and The Rev. Alan Baroody. All three are members of the National Response Team of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and have extensive experience in working with communities in the aftermath of a disaster.

Workshop attendees will learn the following:
•5 critical elements of professional resiliency
•How to maximize effectiveness as a caregiver
•Skills to sustain longevity as a professional caregiver
•Integration of science and faith filled practices
•To burn brightly and never burn out
