Angus Augustus Burleigh
Angus Augustus Burleigh was a Black slave from Kentucky who joined the Union Army in 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in the Confederate states. As a Kentucky slave, Burleigh was not among the freed slaves of the Confederacy, but he was among the many who joined the fight for freedom for slaves everywhere. Hasan Davis will present his riveting story at Pikes Peak Community College.

With this tour, we are continuing a decade-long tradition of bringing humanities scholars to Colorado to perform and educate young and old audiences as we honor Black History Month. As always, we hope you will stay for the discussion afterward with Hasan Davis, a noted Kentucky poet, scholar, storyteller, youth advocate, and Chautauquan (a portrayer of legendary and historical characters). In addition to being a performer, Davis is the Commissioner for Juvenile Justice for the state of Kentucky, holds a Juris Doctorate, serves on the Federal Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee, and owns his own business, Empowerment Solutions, focusing on youth development. Drawing on his multiple talents, Davis presents African-American characters from the past in ways that encourage audiences to read and understand more about our cultural and ethnic history and to reach for higher education and personal achievements.
