"An Evening of Romances and Inditas"

Concert: "An Evening of Romances and Inditas" — The Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies presents this concert by Brenda Romero as part of the 2012-13 Andrew Norman Lecture and Concert. Brenda Romero is an associate professor of music at the University of Colorado-Boulder and is well known for her renditions of early folksongs of New Mexico. Her performance will offer a brief sampling of romances (early Spanish ballads), but will focus largely on Inditas (literally “Indian maidens”), including songs… Show more of captivity and a variety of other songs that John Donald Robb, Enrique Lamadrid, and Romero have categorized as Inditas. She will discuss the genre and what it reveals about intercultural dynamics and the complexity of New Mexican identities. Accompanying Romero will be Rebecca Oertli. Lauded for her "intimidating mastery" by the New York Press and as the violinist for "the best chamber concert of the year" by Austin Critic's Table, Oertli has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe.
