Soul Calling – a Photographic Journey Through the Hmong Diaspora
This presentation is the story of Joel Pickford's 5-year project to document the saga of 1000s of new Hmong refugees as they arrived in California from refugee camps in Thailand. He began by photographing the Hmong as they adapted to life 8000 miles from their birthplace. As the project evolved he began to document Hmong American culture as practiced by families from earlier waves of immigration. From 2006-2011, Joel traveled to Laos 5 times to capture images of Hmong village life and culture.
