Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, Esperanza Spalding, became the first jazz artist to win that category in the Grammy’s 53-year history. A child prodigy, Spalding, had already taught herself the violin by age five and was playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. She went on to become one of the youngest instructors in the history of Berklee College of Music, prior to her successful solo career as a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
