About Mike Moroski
Mike Moroski was born and raised… Show more in Atlanta, GA before moving to Cincinnati 17 years ago. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in English at Xavier University. He also earned his teaching license from the State of Ohio in that time. Mike taught English at Moeller High School for ten years and served as a House Dean for six. Mike left Moeller to work at Purcell Marian as their Dean of Student Life because the Mission of the school is the Mission of Mike’s life – bridging gaps through education. Mike has also served as an affordable housing advocate and project leader for eleven years in Over-the-Rhine (OTR). OTR is the nation’s largest, intact urban historic district that, for years, underwent severe disinvestment. Mike worked to rehabilitate buildings for those who needed affordable housing. Six years ago, Mike co-founded Choices Cafe with Mike Rogers, a formerly homeless man who is currently nine years sober and working at 21C Hotel. Choices Cafe promoted relationships between the rich and poor in the name of an equitable, peaceful Cincinnati. Choices Café closed its doors in 2013, but its programs still thrive in the community – namely the HELP Program which builds job-skills & finds careers for citizens returning from prison.
Mike graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May of 2013 with a Master’s degree in non-profit Business Administration. Mike has served as initial board chair at WordPlay & Micah’s House, Trustee at the Drop Inn Center homeless shelter, and currently serves as Trustee on the board of Invest in Neighborhoods, the Preschool Promise Community Engagement Committee, the WCPO Community Advisory Board, and co-chairs the Cincinnati Neighborhood Olympics Committee. Lastly, Mike is an Executive Committee member of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, and the Treasurer of the Sedamsville Community Development Corporation.
Mike has received the Nobel Prize for Public Service, the Jefferson Award; Xavier University’s highest honor for a young graduate, the Magis Award, for his service to the City of Cincinnati; OTR Community Housing’s Mary Johnson Award for volunteerism; Moeller High School’s Founder’s Day Award for his leadership with his students; was named to the business Courier’s Forty Under 40 Class of 2011; received The Human Rights Campaign’s “Ally Award” for his public defense of marriage equality which cost him his job at Purcell Marian; and was given the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by his high school alma mater, Marist High School.
Currently, Mike serves as Director of Community Programs at Community Matters in Lower Price Hill and will be running for Cincinnati Public School Board in 2015.
