Opioid Pain medicine abuse is rampant in Southern Ohio based on data from he althcar e, law enforcement, public health, and the coroner system. This educational event will give the prescriber updated perspectives from service providers along the prescription pathway. This course provides practical approaches to meeting State Medical and Nursing Board obligations and help patients receive appropriate assessment, treatment, and monitoring of the use of opioid pain medicines.

* Identify what constitutes an appropriate assessment of a patient with chronic or acute pain. *F ollow best practice guidelines for treatment of chronic pain. * Monitor patients being treated with long-term controlled substances and identify when further consultation is needed. * Identify the prevalence and demographics of chronic pain * Define lawful and best practice medical management and monitoring of multimodal care. * Discuss perspectives of the comprehensive health care team. OARRS/Ohio Law Update (Donald Sullivan, Phd) * Discuss the new legal requirements for patient monitoring by physicians and pharmacists regarding Oarrs and Ohio House Bill 93. * Discuss patient cases regarding the appropriate use and monitoring of patients using the Oarrs System * Discuss the legal requirements of electronic prescribing and dispensing controlled substances. * Discuss the legal requirements of controlled substance prescribing and dispensing regarding computer to fax and standard faxed prescriptions. * Discuss recent law updates affecting pharmacist/physician practice Urine Testing/New Pharmaceuticals (Phil Prior, MD) *Administer the right level of drug screen for the right patient *Analyze urine drug screens *Know the clinical implications of inconsistencies *Recognize new and upcoming pharmaceuticals Primary Care Perspective (John Gabis, MD) * assess patients for physiologic and psychological sources of pain. * utilize information from a team of resources to further assess pain medication needs and use. * assess and mitigate for diversion of controlled substances used in the treatment of chronic pain Lunch/Vendors
Nurse Practitioner Law Update and Perspectives (Christine Williams, MSN, CNP, Faanp ) *Discuss law and rules pertinent to contemporary APRNpractice in Ohio *Review schedule II prescribing and Oarrs Law and Rule as it pertains to APRNs *State the Requirements for staying compliant with Ohio s rules for Aprn practice. *Review what the Aprn should do if the board comes knocking.
Hospice Perspective (David Towle, Do) * Discuss issues of misuse of narcotics after discharge * Provide real case examples of drug incidents from a hospice perspective * Discuss drug diversion techniques from a hospice perspective
Law Enforcement Perspective (Thomas Hollis, II, Ross County Sheriff's Department) * Recognize law enforcement drug diversion efforts * Provide real case examples of drug incidents from a law enforcement perspective * Increase community awareness * Propose solutions on the home front * Solicit community approach to drug problem
