Lefties by Leigh Johnson

The Saint Sebastian Players continue the company's 32nd season presenting the world premiere of LEFTIES by Chicago area playwright Leigh Johnson, running February 15March 10, 2013.
This drama primarily examines the relationship of a Russian born father, an avowed Communist who loves baseball, clashes with his son, a gifted semi-professional pitcher who has become entranced by capitalism and its prospects. This play, set in McCarthy-era America, is about family pride and fathers and sons and the damage… Show more done by the secrets we keep from each other.
Playwright Johnson explained: "The spark that initiated "Lefties" came from events in the life of my dad's best friend, "Uncle" Herbie. Herbie was an outstanding pitcher from Aurora who was signed by the Cubs in the 1940's, and who probably would have made it to the big leagues had he not been involved in an automobile accident that cut short his career. His parents were of Yugoslavian origin (specifically Croatian, I believe) who were communists, true believers in the Soviet Union, and not bashful about making their beliefs known. While they were not harshly persecuted for their politics (although Herbie did say the authorities would occasionally stop by for a "chat") it was this combination of events that was the inspiration for the play".
Directing Lefties is Jamie Prahl, who directed The Adventures of Nervous Boy at Gorilla Tango Theatre and Bedtime and Ransomed Soul for The Side Project/Cut to the Quick fest. The production team includes Lauren Angelopoulos as set designer, Jerica Hucke as costume designer, Eric Vigo as lighting designer, Tom Jasek as sound designer, Beth E. Bruins as production stage manager and SSP company members Jim Masini as properties manager, Jonathan "Rocky" Hagloch as producer.
