In the 1990s, Herb Silverman ran for governor of South Carolina to challenge a state law that required religious belief to hold public office. After an eight-year battle, Silverman won a unanimous decision in the South Carolina Supreme Court, which struck down this religious test requirement. At the next meeting of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry, Silverman will discuss his experiences on the campaign trail and elsewhere, facing Christian fundamentalists of all stripes in open debate.
