There are a few things that bother me about Cho, and most of them are superficial. The content of her bits is often a little punkish, but come out sounding like a valley girl, which just seems weird to me. It really detaches me from her, which is a bad thing for a comedian. A good comedian should make you feel like you're there when telling the story through imagery, or express things you can relate to, so you can fill in the gaps yourself. Imagining a character like herself follow through her stories feels unbelievable, and not in the good way. I often wonder how she didn't get decked for just being annoying. She also falls into the common pitfall of self depreciating race jokes. Thats always a bit of a cop out. I mean, I'm fine with it, but when she starts to bomb, out comes the impressions of her mom and the ridiculously thick "asian" accent.
If you like Carlos Mencia, you'll probably like Margaret Cho, which isn't a bad thing, because they aren't horrible comedians if you are into that thing, but their humor really has to be similar to your own for it to be appreciated at all. I find alot of my gay friends really like her because of her strong background in San Francisco, but when asked for specific examples they rarely have anything that doesn't sound kinda dumb upon repeating it outside the comedy scene. Guess you had to be there...
