In this program, we’ll explore the effects of billing practices on perpetuating gender biases in the law. Anecdotal evidence and research suggests that women tend to underbill, whereas men tend to overbill. Neither is good. Underbilling costs firms money and limits the advancement of the people who underbill. Overbilling harms the client and can also limit advancement when clients figure… Show more out they're being overcharged. Why does this apparent disparity in billing practices exist, and what can be done about it? How can attorneys ensure that they are paid fairly? This one hour panel of diverse experts in bias and billing will explain some of the beliefs that lead to bias in billing, how to change those beliefs and how to implement simple daily tools to bill efficiently, ethically, and accurately.
About the Speakers
Moderator: Amanda A. Allen
Amanda Allen is the founder and managing attorney at Aguirre Allen Law where she practices business and real estate transactions, as well as litigation. Prior to starting her own practice she practiced at Hecht Solberg, a boutique real estate firm. She provides legal services that are approachable, efficient and effective. Her practice focuses on helping clients grow their businesses, resolve disputes, pursue or defend against litigation and manage risk in business transactions such as partnership agreement and leases. She represents a broad range of clients including individuals, small business owners, property owners, non-profit organizations and entrepreneurs reaching for big dreams. Amanda specialized in representing craft breweries in real estate, land use and business matters. Amanda is a native San Diegan and enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors with her husband and daughter, whom they call “dragon” for various fire-breathing reasons. She has received a number of awards including the Lawyers Club of San Diego 2013 Hugh C. Friedman New Lawyer Award and was recently named a 2014 finalist for the San Diego Business Journal's list of "Women Who Mean Business.”

Jaqueline S. Vinaccia
Jacqueline S. Vinaccia is a partner and head of the litigation department at Lounsbery Ferguson Altona & Peak LLP. Ms. Vinaccia litigation practice focuses on municipal, land use, and real estate law, and assisting clients in business related disputes. In addition to her litigation and trial practice, for the last 15 plus years, Ms. Vinaccia has also worked as an expert witness in case involving legal fee disputes. Ms. Vinaccia has provided legal fee expert services in California, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington, several of which involved several million dollars in fees and required review of invoices of National Counsel for a single insured on large asbestos claims. Her analyses have been cited by the US District Court for Western Washington and California Superior Court, and by various arbitrators throughout the United States. Ms. Vinaccia has also written several articles and presented workshops to several groups all over the country regarding appropriate billing techniques, ethical billing, and recovery of attorneys’ fees and costs.
Kate Mayer Mangan
Kate Mayer Mangan is a litigation partner and co-chair of the Appellate Group at Hahn, Loeser & Parks. She frequently writes and speaks on attorney well-being, which led her to found www.donocle.com. Her work has appeared in the LA Daily Journal, The Huffington Post, and Ms. JD.
Kate focuses her practice in litigation with an emphasis on appellate law. She previously ran her own firm and was an associate in the San Diego office of Latham & Watkins. She also served as a law clerk to the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Kate is dedicated to giving back to the community; to that end, she founded and taught the Appellate Litigation Clinic at the University of San Diego School of Law, which provides law students with the opportunity to litigate pro bono appeals in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Wiley W. Manual Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services, Daily Transcript’s Top Young Attorney, and she is a 2014 finalist for the San Diego Business Journal's list of "Women Who Mean Business.”
