Why are you doing this? Why did you choose these two organizations in particular?
Many of us have grieved over the destruction wrought by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, without really knowing how to help. Sharing that frustration, a small group of folks from Camden, Philly, and Norristown have gathered to hold a fundraiser for several organizations which have been doing excellent work in fighting the spread of Ebola.
It is absolutely critical that this outbreak be stamped out for several reasons besides the already horrifying loss of life:
The collateral damage is immense; hospitals are so overwhelmed in treating Ebola that they cannot deliver babies for women with obstructed labor, treat patients coming in with typhoid and malaria, etc… and these patients die without medical care. Children cannot go to school. Exports from the affected countries are stringently limited.
If Ebola’s spread is not arrested soon, there is great risk of its becoming endemic to large swaths of the African continent (this would mean that there are always some active human cases and ongoing transmission). The devastation that this would cause to the economies of the affected countries and the entire continent boggles the mind.
Of course, as you have heard with various degrees of alarmism on the evening news, globalization of this disease is a risk. This is most a concern with resource-poor countries lacking the infrastructure to trace contacts and isolate patients effectively while treating them.
Although the global response has been late overall, the two organizations for which we are raising funds have been working to stop this outbreak from its earliest days, and are faithfully continuing to do so – they need our support! We believe our communities can make a difference even in this faraway crisis!
