The cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL_N(Z) for large N and algebraic K-theory
The homology of SL_N(Z) in a fixed degree d turns out to be independent of N for sufficiently large N. This phenomenon is known as stability. The actual homology groups themselves turn out to be intimately related to the algebraic K-theory of the integers.
