SATURDAY, APRIL 13TH, 7PM to 10PM
With helping hands from ancient Greece, the Calistoga Art Center is presenting the first Ekphrasis Gala, a celebration of artistic collaborations.
Ekphrasis (ˈek-frə-səs\ ) is an art form dating back to Plato and Aristotle, in which one art form inspires creativity in another artist. The idea is not to duplicate but to respond to the spirit of the first piece in creating a second work of art. For instance, writer Lope de Vega often used allusions and descriptions… Show more of Italian art in his plays, and included the painter Titian as one of his characters.
For this event, photography is the catalyst for any and all mediums. A second artist can be working in anything from feathers, to gold, to flour and water. Moving from one medium to another is the heart of Ekphrasis.
A call went out to artists throughout the Bay Area inviting them to play with the concept of artistic collaboration. The artists were told, "It's all about inspiration and imagination anything goes". One photograph from each participating photographer was selected and used by a second artist to create a new work of art. A three-judge panel of professionals will evaluate the paired works; a first place award of $1,000.00, to be announced by Napa County Supervisor Diane Dillon, will be made the evening of the Gala.
On Saturday April 13th, the CAC will host the first Ekphrasis Gala to exhibit the inspiring photographs and the inspired works including: sculpture, textiles, paintings, ceramics, and more. Venue design by Stage Interiors of Sonoma, will celebrate the inspiration and imagination that always occurs in art, wine, food, and music.
