Supporting Rigorous English Language Arts Instruction, Session 2:
Understanding the relationship between complex texts, text-based questions, and academically productive talk
CFN 609 would like to re-invite 3 of your teachers (inclusive of instructional lead representation as identified in Galaxy) to attend an interactive Professional Development Session in English Language Art.
During our time together, we will deepen our understanding about what makes texts complex as well as why and how we should… Show more read complex texts with students. We’ll engage in analyzing texts for complexity using two tools, and then extend our work with texts to consider the kinds of tasks we design for students using such texts. To this end, we will learn about and practice developing sequenced, text-based questions that scaffold students’ reading and understanding of those complex texts.
We will also learn about Accountable Talk ® practices in ELA as a way to improve academic rigor of discussions and support student learning. We will review of features of Accountable Talk ® and analyze classroom videos to identify teacher moves reflecting on how academically productive talk might look in our rooms. Finally, we’ll consider how these three factors – texts, tasks, and talk – work together to support students to meet the demands of the CCSS.
