This two week course is a shorter version of my four week course, Professional Songwriting. The course continues weekly at the same time and place for two weeks in total. For example, the course taking place in November starts on the 22nd and concludes on the 29th. Each session lasts two hours.
In week one, we will look at lyric writing and ways to effectively pair music with words. I will teach creative writing exercises designed to help you write lyrics that will resonate strongly with the listener.… Show more Furthermore, we explore the natural rhythm of words and how lyrical structures can be formed and matched to the rhythm of music so that the most important words are sung on the first beat of the bar. We will look at how various rhythmic patterns and rhyme schemes can be used to reinforce the emotions behind the song.
In week two, we shall look at music composition . I discuss how to create an individual sound . You will have the opportunity to play and discuss music you like (or don’t.) I will teach chord structure and sequence and how to be inventive with these. Overall song structure, including the importance of similarity and contrast within a song, is also examined.
This songwriting course will also cover the basics of music business, including how to work as an independent artist, build up a fan base and attract a record label in the long run. I also discuss the potential pitfalls that exist within the music industry.
This course was designed with intermediate songwriters in mind. However, if you’re a beginner or experienced songwriter and feel this course will benefit you, you are welcome to attend.
It is not essential to play an instrument to a high standard, but you will take more from this course if you are learning an instrument. You do not need to read music in order to attend this course. Topics such as chord structure will be explained and demonstrated using instruments, as oppose to sheet music.
