The Caryatids on the Erechtheum at Athens: questions of chronology and symbolism

Thursday, Feb 7, 2013 7:00p

Public lecture by Professor and Distinguished Visiting Scholar Michael Vickers (Oxford), explores the meaning of the beautiful "porch of the maidens" on the Athenian Acropolis. Far from being ‘Maids of Greece, who might one day still be free’, the Caryatids are shown to be traitors and quislings, designed to highlight the (despicable) contemporary close relations between Athenian enemies, Sparta and Persia. CU Boulder - Hellems Room 201. Parking available at Euclid and 18th.
