AIA Lecture - Bison Hunting as a Social Institution: A Bird's Eye View

Saturday, Feb 2, 2013 7:00p

Archaeologists have approached bison hunting as an economic pursuit driven by prey behavior. This view was perpetuated by the archaeological record in the western Plains and focus on the kill site and hunting weapon. Advances in theory and dating methods reveal that bison hunting involved monumental labor management and landscape engineering. A bird’s eye view of the late prehistoric ancestral Blackfoot bison hunting tradition recasts bison hunting through religion, social and political control.
