Young Goethe in Love

In the late 1700s, Romanticism was a push-back against rationalism and industrialism. In this climate, Goethe wrote a largely autobiographical novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther, which so ignited the youth in Germany with “Werther-Fieber” (Werther Fever). This movie beautifully captures the exhiliration, mad passion, frustration, and occasional tragedy of young love, while depicting the history that inspired the influential novel.
