This November, come support the animals at this delcious tasting of homemade vegan cheese, various wine, and chocolate in honor of the amazing work VINE Sanctuary of Vermont has been a part of for the last 14 years.
VINE Sanctuary offers refuge to animals who have escaped or been rescued from the meat, dairy and egg industries or other hurtful circumstances, such as cockfighting or vivisection. Sanctuary residents include chickens, cows, ducks, doves, geese, sheep, emus, our first pig, and even… Show more a few parakeets.
In addition to sheltering and advocating for animals, we conduct research and education aimed at creating systemic changes in agriculture, trade, and consumption as well as human attitudes about animals and the environment.
We work within an ecofeminist understanding of the interconnection of all life and the intersection of all forms of oppression. Thus we welcome and work to facilitate alliances among animal, environmental, and social justice activists.
VINE Sanctuary (formerly Eastern Shore Sanctuary) began as a chicken sanctuary on a two-acre plot in Maryland in 2000 and has expanded organically since, maintaining our core commitments while steadily widening the sphere of our work. Today, VINE Sanctuary occupies two adjoining plots in Vermont, with more than 100 acres, of which 65 remain forest, 25 are cleared pasture, 10 are rough-cleared pasture, and the remainder are occupied by coops, aviaries, and foraging yards for birds.
Eastern Shore Sanctuary (now VINE Sanctuary) was the first to figure out how to rehabilitate roosters used in cockfighting and continues to both shelter and advocate for these birds. We are the only farmed animal sanctuary founded and staffed by LGBTQ people and have taken a leading role in the effort to understand the connections among speciesism, sexism, and homophobia.
