Book Talk: John Demos on "The Heathen School"
Yale historian John Demos discusses his latest book, "The Heathen School: A Story of Hope and Betrayal in the Age of the Early Republic." Founded in the early 19th-century, the school was designed to Christianize "heathen youth" from around the world and soon became famous. But, as it pressed the limits of tolerance, it provoked a backlash that helped American racial attitudes harden and intensify, setting off a chain of disastrous and tragic events for Native Americans.
