Emancipated Century, King Hedley II
In the 1980s, the urban wasteland is overrun with weeds. King Hedley, son of the Caribbean immigrant in Seven Guitars, has grown up. His promise, though, is gone; still he scratches in the earth trying to make a seed sprout. Around him, the streets spawn violence, and he is caught in that web. The future is grey and the spirit of resilience forged in slavery is waning. Aunt Ester, spiritual pillar of Wilson's cycle, may have breathed her last, but Wilson leaves us with a promise of resurrection.
