The Flower of Empire: An Amazonian Water Lily, the Quest to Make It Bloom, and the World It Created

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 12:00p

Author Tatiana Holway describes the discovery, in 1837, of a “vegetable wonder” in a remote section of the Amazon River basin--- a dazzlingly beautiful white water lily so colossal and fast growing it could reach eight feet across. Taken back to England by a British explorer, Victoria regia, named after the young British Queen, became an instant horticultural celebrity and the inspiration for the famous design of the Crystal Palace a decade later.
