Book Talk: Michelle Marchetti Coughlin "One Colonial Woman's World: The Life and Writings of Mehetebel Chandler Coit"
Roxbury native Mehetabel Chandler Coit (1673-1758) is the author of what may be the earliest surviving diary by an American woman. Kept for more than 60 years, the diary is a remarkable record of a rich and varied life that included raising children, reading, writing, and maintaining a wide network of family, social, and commercial connections. Coughlin explores the numerous and surprising ways in which Coit's personal life was linked to broader social and political developments.
