Torres began flute studies when he was 12 in his native Puerto Rico and continued training at Mannes School of Music in New York and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, as well as Berklee College of Music. During this time, he developed his improvisational skills playing in Latin dance clubs, a scene in which he worked with the likes of Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cru
