Molly Abraham, Detroit News Restaurant Critic: The Grill, as its many fans call it, has been a hit ever since it opened 20 years ago in the small space that had housed a very routine lunch counter. Proprietor Bill Roberts took the view, and still does, that consistency, freshness and service were the keys to success, and the longevity proves it. What is especially remarkable is that the Grill serves all three meals seven days a week, and does it with style. The basic American menu - such dishes as crabcakes Benedict, tenderloin and mixed green salad, veal meatloaf and braised short ribs is varied with mostly seafood chalkboard specials that change daily. Reservations have never been accepted, and people wait relatively cheerfully for a table. Named as one of America's best in the 2011 Zagat guide.
