The Tempest (Derek Jarman; U.K., 1979)

Saturday, Aug 16 8:35p

Brooding and darkly laden with heavily symbolic imagery, Jarman’s terrific third feature is considered by many to be the most evocative Shakespeare adaptation ever to reach the screen. Rich images of shining gold and dark water dominate, while furtive magus Prospero converses with—and attempts to manipulate—forceful Ariel, a spirit from the beyond. Superlative performances are delivered by a fine ensemble cast, but Elisabeth Welch and her delicious rendition of “Stormy Weather” steal the show!
