Obsession, Brian De Palma (U.S., 1976)
A heightened homage to Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Obsession induces bouts of dizziness through its whirlpooling camera moves, eddying Bernard Herrmann score, and maniacal plot twists, replete with body doubles and double crosses. As penned by Paul Schrader, a New Orleans developer slips into emotional oblivion after the rescue of his kidnapped wife and daughter is botched. Years later, he returns to the Florence cathedral where he first met his wife, only to encounter her absolute likeness.
