Program III: Stravinsky, Adams, Mendelssohn
This program opens with Stravinsky’s delightful Pulcinella Suite followed by the yet-untitled world premiere of Samuel Carl Adams’ new work for violin and ensemble, introducing British violinist Anthony Marwood to the Bay Area. The evening ends with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3. Though many regard the “Scottish” Symphony as Mendelssohn’s finest orchestral work, no one has been able explain that nickname satisfactorily, as there is little in the work to suggest anything distinctively Scottish.
