AIA San Francisco Society La Follete Lecture: Eat Drink and Be Roman, How to Survive a Roman Banquet

Tuesday, Jan 29, 2013 7:30p
370 Dwinelle Hall Berkeley, CA

The Roman banquet was a social event that holds a peculiar place in modern popular culture. It was more than a chance to eat well with friends, but an opportunity to expand one’s political and economic horizons. This lecture explores the purposes, processes and changes of the Roman banquet from the 1st through the 6th century AD. The divergence of banqueting fashions represents a fissure between the ruling elite and the masses, and may have everything to do with the rise of Christianity.
