A distinctive singer-songwriter and a skilled guitarist, Richard Julian has gained recognition and rave reviews by crafting songs with strong melodies that support witty, finely honed lyrics, full of cinematic detail. This month, Richard brings his impressive repertoire to the Freight for a three-show "residency" (September 8, 15, and 22) performing stark and swinging originals from his five CDs, including the recent Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes (Manhattan).
Born in Delaware, Richard studied classical piano as a child but somehow ended up performing in Las Vegas cocktail lounges. Subsequently relocating to New York, he has spent the past few years working on various projects including fronting The Little Willies, a low-key country collaboration with Norah Jones and Jim Campilongo. His shows at the Freight will give us a chance to hear a wide selection of his tunes, with the spotlight on recent numbers in which he turns a wry eye on contemporary U.S. culture.
Each show is opened with a set by San Francisco singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman, a first-generation Sri Lankan American known for his rich voice and fiery, politically-charged lyrics.
