The Anvil is one of the largest entertainment venues in Hampshire. Seating 1300 people, it can also be adapted into a concert hall. The Anvil is popular for its classical music performances, including many appearances from orchestras such as the Philharmonia, Berlin Symphony and the St Petersburg Philharmonic - and it was proud to host the last UK performance of legendary pianist Sir Alfred Brendel. Comedians such as Lee Evans, Jo Brand, Frankie Boyle and Paul Merton have appeared at The Anvil, and the Autumn 2008 season saw the visits of musical stars as varied as Boy George, Dionne Warwick and The Stylistics. Every Christmas The Anvil presents a different pantomime - full of festive fun and magic for all the family.
The Anvil was built by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. Work started in August 1992 and the building opened in May 1994. The quality of the acoustic was the prime consideration throughout the building process, and the auditorium was designed to have near-ideal shape and volume.
“It boasts acoustics as warm as an Italian courtyard.” The Times
“Designed without compromise as an ideal concert hall.” The Observer
“The acoustics [offer] a commendable combination of warmth and clarity.” The Independent
“The acoustics seemed to me well nigh ideal.” The Observer
“A regional venue worth the journey.” The Times
b. Dublin, Eire. After singing in Dublin, Tobin went to London where she studied at the Guildhall School of Music, taking the jazz course. Tobin is now a regular on the UK jazz scene, working with musicians such as Jean Toussaint, Billy Childs, Kenny Wheeler, and Django Bates, and has established regular slots at Ronnie Scott’s and the South Bank’s Purcell Room....
One of the most original and distinctive new stars on television, Jimmy was recently a guest on the current series of 'Parkinson' (BBC1) and 'Bafta Tribute to Bob Monkhouse' (BBC1). And, as the face of comedy on Channel 4, after the successes of 'Your Face Or Mine' and the first series of the prime-time gameshow 'Distraction,' he is currently presenting the second series of 'Distraction,' which started on Channel 4 on 16th April 2004....
Along with Maggie Boyle, his Irish wife, Steve Tilston is one of the most compelling artists in this genre of music. His songwriting, singing, and guitar work are all excellent, and her singing of traditional songs and her instrumental work are likewise impressive....
Organized by Simon Emmerson of the Afro Celt Sound System, the Imagined Village project boasts an eclectic ensemble of musicians reinterpreting traditional songs through a modernist sieve. The talented cast of characters includes Emmerson, Billy Bragg, Tiger Moth, Johnny Kalsi, Sheila Chandra, the Copper Family, Paul Weller, Benjamin Zephaniah, Transglobal Underground, Tunng, Chris Wood, the Gloworms, the Dhol Foundation, and Martin and Eliza Carthy....
Suzanne Vega was the first major figure in the bumper crop of female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence during the late '80s and '90s. Her hushed, restrained folk-pop and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark sound of Lilith Fair (a tour on which she was a regular)....
England's Philharmonia is a relative youngster among orchestras, having arisen out of the ashes of London's disrupted orchestral life in the wake of World War II. Within an astonishingly short time, it rose to a high level of quality with a deep, burnished tone similar to the best Austrian-German ensembles....
Unlike some other bluesmen now leading their own bands, guitarist and singer/songwriter Doug MacLeod spent many years as an apprentice before forming his own group. MacLeod has worked as a sideman for many different artists from the Los Angeles-area blues scene, including Big Joe Turner, Charles Brown, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and George "Harmonica" Smith....
