About This Class
In this hands-on workshop, we'll cover the fundamentals of computer programming using Ruby.
You'll learn:
What variables, methods, strings, objects, and symbols are, and how you can manipulate them
How to write simple programs that you can run from your computer's command line
How to write code that accepts input from the user or from a file
We'll be roughly following the first 15 chapters of Learn Ruby the Hard… Show more Way . The class will work on programming problems, with the teacher acting as a coach. You will be in the driver's seat! I will also include a tour of Ruby on Rails at the end to give you a hint of what can be accomplished with Ruby, and we'll talk about ways to continue your training after the class.
Prerequisite:
You must have Ruby installed on the computer you will be using. These instructions are the easiest:

About the Instructor
Mike Subelsky is a Baltimore-based programmer and entrepreneur, focused primarily on web application development using Ruby, JavaScript, and related technologies. He recently co-founded and serve as the Cto for Staq . In 2007 he co-founded a web startup called OtherInbox.com, which was acquired in 2011 by ReturnPath . He's a big believer in Baltimore's innovation community of artists, technologists, thinkers, and strivers of all types. That belief has powered his efforts in co-founding Ignite Baltimore, the Baltimore Hackathon, Baltimore Improv Group, and other projects. Before becoming a programmer, he was a U.S. Navy cryptologic officer for seven years, serving in a variety of overseas assignments. He blogs about technology and Baltimore at subelsky.com .
