KUTX Live presents Texas Songwriters' Circle, featuring Butch Hancock, James McMurtry and Kevin Russell.
We are pleased to invite three outstanding Texas songwriters to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime song swap. Butch Hancock of the Flatlanders will be joined by perennial Austin favorites James McMurtry and Kevin Russell (The Gourds, Shinyribs) for an acoustic evening of songs, stories, and collaboration. Stateside at the Paramount was built for shows like this one.
Texas singer/songwriter James McMurtry, known for his hard-edged character sketches, comes from a literary family; his father, novelist and screenwriter Larry McMurtry, gave James his first guitar at age seven, and his mother, an English professor, taught him how to play it....
Kevin Russell is primarily known as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, and banjo) for eclectic Austin, TX, roots-rockers the Gourds. On his own, Russell (using the moniker Kev Russell's Junker) stepped out with the album Buttermilk and Rifles on Sugar Hill Records in 2002....
Butch Hancock is best known as a member of the pioneering Texas alt-country band the Flatlanders, who made one album in the early '70s, then reunited decades later. The most prolific (and arguably most gifted) of the three Flatlanders (including Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore), Hancock began releasing solo albums in 1978, turning out one record after another full of poetic, Dylanesque tunes....
