Bettye LaVette & The Blind Boys of Alabama at The Town Hall

Friday, May 17, 2013 8:00p
The Town Hall Astoria, NY

After over 50 years in music, legendary soul singer Bettye LaVette has finally arrived on The Town Hall stage. She’ll be joined by 5-time Grammy Award winners The Blind Boys of Alabama in their first show at The Town Hall since 2005. Ms. LaVette’s heart-wrenching and soulful blues are a perfect foil for the soul-stirring gospel of The Blind Boys of Alabama. The Town Hall is proud to present these masterful acts together for one night only.

Bettye LaVette is a symbol of gritty persistence in the face of music industry indifference. Though she emerged from the same fecund Detroit music community that gave rise to, among many others, Aretha Franklin and the entire early Motown roster, she remained a relative unknown to those outside the most dedicated of soul circles....

Bettye Lavette

I saw Bettye Lavette on Conan O'Brien last night (Jan. 16th) and was absolutely KNOCKED OUT. I live 50 miles from Detroit, and had never heard of her! I admit I am not much of a consumer of music, but I am wondering why she hasn't got a larger presence around here, and indeed, everywhere. She was great! Her voice has a lot of feeling and character, like a cross between Aretha and Janis Joplin. Her band played PERFECT FUNKY MUSIC, and the overall performance made a convert out of me. Two big thumbs up from this dude.
