The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble Presents A St. Patrick's Day Concert

WCU School of Music Website March 17, 2013 3:00 PM The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John T. West, is the premiere instrumental ensemble in the WCU School of Music and is comprised of 55 student musicians. The concert program will include a wide variety of music for the wind band and will include a tribute to St. Patrick's Day. The program includes "Resplendent Glory" by Rossano Gallante - a beautiful and cinematic concert opener reflecting the composer's background… Show more in film music. Next will be a delightful work by the British composer Guy Woolfenden titled Bohemian Dances. This piece was originally written as incidental music to Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale when Woolfenden was composing for the Royal Shakespeare Company in England. Featured on the program will be WCU's trumpet professor (and Asheville Symphony Musician) Dr. Bradley Ulrich. Dr. Ulrich will perform the Sonata for Trumpet by Kent Kennan. This adaptation of the original (for trumpet and piano) was done by the composer and showcases the virtuosity of the soloist. Before the Irish music begins, the ensemble will perform a recent work by the American composer Julie Giroux. The piece is entitled "The Speed of Heat" which refers to the lingo of Air Force fighter pilots. This exciting work really employs all of the colors and dazzling technique of the modern wind ensemble. It's a real crowd pleaser. No concert on St. Patrick's Day would be complete without some Irish music and perhaps the best known of all is Leroy Anderson's Irish Suite. This piece dates from the late 1940's and features such well-known tunes as the Irish Washerwoman, the Minstrel Boy and the Rakes of Mallow.
