Signature Theatre presents Sweeney Todd
Based on the play by Christopher Bond
Directed by Eric Schaeffer
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is back! The first musical ever presented at Signature gets a brand new environmental staging in the MAX Theatre as part of our 20th anniversary season.
No one's work better represents Signature than composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim's. And Sweeney Todd is Sondheim's masterpiece – with all its gothic gore, lush songs, and romantic melodrama. It's a grand musical that has all the stuff of a classic horror story – betrayal, revenge, madness, and murder.
The "meat" pies will be baking and the blood will be flowing in this thriller musical comedy featuring a celebrated cast of Signature Theatre favorites.
Book by Hugh Wheeler
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

This production is, by far, the worst road show I have ever seen come through this area.
It consists of approximately 10 actors (who also make up the orchestra), one rather bleak set piece, and a series of props. If you can picture people attempting to sing and play their parts while carting around musical instruments and trying to avoid bumping into each other, then you've got the gist of the whole show.
If you're in the mood for "Sweeney Todd - The Concert" then by all means go; there are at least some good singers on the stage. If, however, you're looking for a rendition of the show which at least bears some passing resemblance to the original Broadway production, then don't waste your money here: go buy the DVD from Amazon.
