Rhythmix Cultural Works, an exciting new center for the performing and visual arts is an important hub of creative living and learning in the Bay Area.
Rhythmix Cultural Works evolved out of Rhythmix, a non-profit world music ensemble established in 1997 dedicated to promoting cultural expression and exchange. Having experienced the power of the cultural arts to bring people together, founder Janet Koike was inspired to create a place that would bring communities together through the arts.
The Goals
• Offer the local community access to a wide range of high quality art experiences.
• Encourage community awareness through participation in the arts.
• Provide artists support to develop and present new work and find new audiences.
• Establish an affordable, new venue for local artists, community events and gatherings.
The Programs
• Performances of dance, music and theater by local and visiting artists.
• Exhibitions of both regional and international fine arts, crafts, multimedia, and digital art.
• After-school classes in dance, movement, music and visual arts.
• Summer programs for youth
• Weekend events for the whole family
• Evening and weekend programs for adults
• Workshops for professionals in dance, music, theater and more.
• International cultural exchange programs.
• Artist interaction with the community.
The Community
RCW is a community-based arts center inclusive of regional and international arts. Our community, while primarily comprised of the local Alameda and Alameda County, will include many individuals from the broader Bay Area and visitors from around the nation and globe.
Diversity is a key component of RCW’s mission. Instructors and classes will reflect the great range of cultural backgrounds in the Bay Area. Performances and exhibitions will be drawn a rich diversity as well. RCW will serve a wide range of ages – children, youth, families and adults will all have opportunities to participate in our programs.
Local partnerships will strengthen our ability to attract diverse users. Classes will be offered through the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department and Alameda Education Foundation, both important local resources. RCW is forming a number of long-term partnerships with local arts providers such as Alameda Children’s Musical Theatre, and is actively working to create relationships with many other local arts organizations.
RCW is deeply committed to serving local artists. Our intimate performance space is an ideal venue for smaller and emerging artistic groups who do not have access to rehearsal and performing spaces. RCW can also be a place for artists to converge and collaborate enabling artists promote and present their work to new audiences.
International partnerships will bring wide spread attention to the community. RCW has an ongoing relationship with Kodo Arts Sphere America (KASA), providing opportunities for the American public to learn about Japanese drumming, and folkloric dance and song from world-famous Kodo artists. RCW plans to bring these and other international artists to its facility for workshops and performances.
The Facility
RCW will be housed in a repurposed industrial building at the heart of a new work/live artist community in Alameda, the first of its kind for the city. The renovated facility will include an art gallery, a multipurpose classroom and a 200-seat performance space with professional stage lighting and sound.
With both permanent residents and daily visitors, the facility will be a lively, new addition to the Northern waterfront, enhancing recent revitalization efforts by the city in the area and creating a safe and unique gathering place for the community.
